Copernicus Through the Panamá Canal

April 12th and 13th, 2014.

What a great way to spend a weekend. The transit of the Panama Canal is is about 45 nautical miles (52 miles). And to think there was time, if you wanted to get from the Pacific to the Atlantic, it was a much greater effort; south for about 4200nm to Cape Horn, NE for about 3500nm to the furthest eastern cape of Brazil, then 3400nm WNW to the Caribbean side of Panama.

Thanks to Laurent, Valerie, Ben and Dawn for letting me show your pictures with mine. You can see Laurent's vid on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r465NNQY1B4&feature=youtu.be

SV Brio started a thread on lessons learned and tips in Cruising Forum. http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f15/panama-canal-pacific-to-atlantic-lessons-learned-and-tips-to-pass-on-125008.html

This is done as we maintain a few knots speed, the pilot boat comes along side and the advisor boards, it was calm that morning, but it can be rough.

... for the canal, they offload onto a train that transports the containers to the Atlantic side and reload onto another frieghter. The expansion is underway, with revised ETA in 2015. Currently freighters pay from $250,000 to $500,000 per transit, the superdupers will be paying about $1M. We paid $1875 and should be getting about $800 back.

    Waiting

We were to raft up to SV Wind Spirit from Portland OR, but they were told to pick up their advisor at 10am when it should have been 7am, like us. I called them to give them a heads up, they pulled a rabbit out of the hat, we made the lock on time. Wow, they are amazing. In the meantime we picked up this mooring to wait for them.
